Marcus Rashford appears ready to begin another chapter at Manchester United, with the England forward expected to return to Old Trafford after an eventful loan spell at Barcelona.

Just a year ago, such a reunion seemed highly unlikely.


When Rashford completed a season-long move to Barcelona in the summer of 2025, many believed his time at United had come to an end. The club had already handed his iconic No. 10 shirt to new signing Matheus Cunha, while Rashford himself spoke positively about embracing a fresh challenge in Spain.

Now, circumstances have changed dramatically, and unless there is an unexpected late development in the transfer market, the 28-year-old will report back for pre-season with the Red Devils.


Rashford Expected to Join United's Pre-Season Camp

Following his participation in the FIFA World Cup, Rashford is expected to return in line with Manchester United's other international players, who have been granted approximately three weeks of rest after their final tournament matches.


His first involvement could come at the club's training camp in Maynooth, Republic of Ireland, next week. If everything goes according to plan, Rashford may feature in United's pre-season schedule, although his availability will depend on how head coach Michael Carrick manages his fitness.

Manchester United face Leeds United at Croke Park on August 12 before taking on AC Milan, now managed by former United boss Ruben Amorim, in Wroclaw on August 15. Given Rashford would have only a few days of training behind him, Carrick may choose to delay his return to competitive action until the Milan fixture.


Barcelona Decided Against Permanent Move

For much of the past year, it was widely assumed Rashford had already played his final game for Manchester United.

His performances in Spain appeared to strengthen that belief. During his loan spell, the forward enjoyed one of the most productive seasons of his career, registering 11 goals and 14 assists across all competitions.


He played a key role as Barcelona secured the La Liga title, lifted the Spanish Super Cup, and progressed to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Despite those impressive contributions, Barcelona ultimately chose not to activate the agreed £26 million purchase clause included in the loan agreement. Initially, many believed the Catalan giants were simply trying to negotiate another loan arrangement.


However, that possibility faded after Barcelona strengthened their attack by signing Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund on July 23, following the earlier arrival of England winger Anthony Gordon.

Rashford effectively confirmed his departure when he posted an emotional farewell message to Barcelona supporters on social media on July 30. Manager Hansi Flick also acknowledged the player's exit after a pre-season friendly.


Speaking to reporters, Flick praised Rashford both professionally and personally, admitting the squad would miss his presence while accepting that football often brings unavoidable changes.


What Rashford's Return Means for Manchester United

Rashford's return creates an entirely different situation for Manchester United. The academy graduate remains under contract until 2028, meaning the club retains complete control over his future. However, his reported £325,000-per-week salary presents a significant financial challenge.

With minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe continuing efforts to reduce Manchester United's wage bill, Rashford remains one of the club's biggest financial commitments. This situation also impacts the club's transfer plans.


United have been relatively quiet in the market since completing the £35 million signing of Youri Tielemans on July 14. If Rashford stays, the club may reconsider pursuing another left-sided attacker or an additional centre-forward, given his versatility across the front line.

Likewise, retaining his wages affects the budget available for further recruitment.


Carrick Could Be Key to Rashford Revival

One factor working in Rashford's favour is his long-standing relationship with Michael Carrick. The two shared the dressing room during Carrick's playing career, with 32 of Rashford's 138 Manchester United goals coming while Carrick was still a player.

Carrick later coached Rashford and even managed him during his brief three-match spell as interim boss following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure in 2021. Sources close to the club suggest the pair have always maintained a positive relationship.


Unlike the previous tension experienced under Amorim, many believe Carrick could provide the supportive environment needed for Rashford to thrive again.

The comparison has already been made with Jadon Sancho, whose reconciliation with Erik ten Hag ultimately lasted only one pre-season tour before another loan move followed. Rashford's situation, however, could prove very different.


Transfer Interest Remains Strong

Although Rashford is preparing to return, his future is not completely settled. Several Premier League clubs and overseas teams have expressed interest in signing him, and further approaches are expected before the September 1 transfer deadline.

Manchester United's stance remains unchanged. The club are not willing to sanction a bargain transfer and have no intention of approving another loan deal.


Unless a suitable permanent offer arrives in the coming weeks, Rashford looks set to remain at Old Trafford and compete for his place in Michael Carrick's squad. After months of uncertainty, the possibility of a long-term Manchester United future is once again very real for one of the club's most recognizable academy graduates.
